BURUNDI
We have three sewing hubs in Burundi, each linked to a local organisation. Together for Development work with vulnerable members of their community. They run sewing training schools which then form small sewing co-operatives. ICJ work with widows and orphans across Bubanza, Muramvya and Cibitoke in the northern regions of Burundi. They have set up a sewing project as part of a wider aspiration to build business opportunities for those living in poverty in these regions. RAJEDES predominantly work in the Burundi’s largest city, Bujumbura, in the deprived parts of the city. Their focus is empowering young people, providing business skills and enterprise opportunities.
INDIA
Our India hub is made of up local women who have a desire to demonstrate love and compassion to the families that live around them. We have blessed each member with a sewing machine. Once a member has built their business they are encouraged to buy their own sewing machine and pass on the blessing to someone else.
KENYA
NIGERIA
TANZANIA
This sewing hub is based in the Nyarugusu refugee camp, about 150 km east of Lake Tanganyika in the western province of Kigoma. Their aim is to reduce unemployment and therefore reduce the risks of theft, banditry and prostitution. Dressmakers are permitted to trade at local markets in the nearby town, Kasulu, where they are able to source locally produced fabric, machinery and other resources.
UGANDA
We are partnered with the vocational centre at TANU in the North of Uganda, near Soroti. The vocational centre offer a range of skills classes, including carpentry, mechanics, tailoring, computer repairs and business management. We work with he tailoring team to support their students to grow in skills and confidence.
UNITED KINGDOM
Sewing hubs in the UK work mainly on building community although there is still an enterprise building element to our work. We currently have one sewing hub in Shropshire and one in Oxfordshire. Our sewing hub in Shropshire tends to serve people living in financial hardship. Our sewing hub in Oxfordshire works to bring people from different backgrounds together. We mend, alter and make clothes, providing the opportunity for people to: use our sewing machines, or bring their own; and complete their own sewing projects or engage with our topic of the week.
