When Christine, who leads the Dorcas Dress Project Sewing Hub in Kenya, described the work God is doing there, she used a beautiful image: “God has a design. He will intertwine people, intertwine different callings, just to expand the Kingdom. It’s God’s tapestry. He puts us together like the threads.” As someone who enjoys embroidery, I loved that metaphor. The back of an embroidery hoop often looks messy and confusing, but turn it over and every stitch has its place. Together, they create something beautiful. That’s what I saw when I met with Christine and three of the women who are part of the Kenya sewing Hub- Everlyne, Linet and Maxmilla. God is weaving their stories together with yours. Every prayer and every dress bought becomes another thread of hope.
A gift from God
Christine didn’t expect sewing to become part of her calling. She shared with me, “Surprisingly I didn’t train to be a tailor. It is a gift from God.” Trained as a teacher, she now teaches the Bible, disciples women, leads prayer in her community and oversees the sewing hub. Each time the women meet, they sew together, pray together and encourage one another in God’s Word.
Everlyne told me that the training has improved her sewing and helped her provide food and school fees for her six children. Linet spoke about learning new skills that are helping her family move out of poverty. Maxmilla shared how the income has enabled her to support her teenage daughter through school and strengthen her small business
A community that gives
As I listened to their stories, I noticed that none of the women spoke first about themselves. They spoke about caring for their families, educating their children and helping others- being a blessing in their community. That’s why Christine is so excited about a new project the hub are going to be working on. The women will sew uniforms for children at Doxa Chara School. They’ll earn an income through their work, while local families will be able to buy good quality uniforms at a more affordable price. Christine hopes that, in time, the project will even provide uniforms for children whose parents simply cannot afford them.

Living like the early Church
The women have also started a savings group called table banking, saving small amounts together and lending from those shared funds whenever someone faces a crisis or needs to invest in their business. This idea reminded me of the early church in the book of Acts, where believers shared what they had so that no one among them was left in need (Acts 4:32–35).
No one imposed this system- it grew naturally because the women now have an income and a community they trust. Their question has become, “How can what God has given me become a blessing to someone else?” Your support has helped make that kind of Kingdom community possible.
You are part of the story
Towards the end of our conversation, I asked if they had a message for everyone in the UK who prays, gives and supports Dorcas Dress Project. Christine said, “we don’t have enough words to say thank you, but from the bottom of our hearts, we want to say thank you so much for coming to rescue these women from those tough pits of struggle. Now they can have something. They can smile. They can pay school fees. They can have food without much struggle. There is hope.”. Christine’s vision goes far beyond the five women currently involved. She dreams of seeing the project grow, with the women eventually working together in one place and training others who are facing similar struggles. “There are many other women going through what we are going through.”
It was so clear to me that Dorcas Dress Project is about far more than sewing. It gives women the chance to discover the gifts God has given them, grow in faith, provide for their families and bless others in their communities. Every prayer, every gift and every dress purchased is another thread in the tapestry God is weaving. Together, those threads are creating opportunities for women, hope for families and a witness to God’s love in practical ways.
